Legend about Tivat

Roman legions around the year 229 AD, due to the continuous assault of Illyrian pirates on Roman ships, attacked Agron’s widow Queen Teuta, well-armed with about 200 ships. The Romans then confiscated her capital, Shkoder. Upon leaving Shkodra, Queen Teuta found shelter in the well-established town of Risen, from which she easily resisted Roman attacks and managed the remains of the Illyrian state. Legend has it that on the marshes and bays of Tivat, Queen Teuta raised a mansion.

Treasure of Ancient Boka

From the Illyrian period numerous tumuli, stone and earthen mounds representing the Illyrian necropolises with burnt inhaled dead were scattered throughout the Boka. There are numerous archeological sites covering the area of Boka Kotorska. The stories and legends of the Illyrian Queen Teuta, who had long resisted the conquest of Rome, have been recounted for centuries. An interesting story is about Teuta, Benedictine Timothy Cizila in his work “The Golden Vo” (Will be fine), describing her stay at a summer residence in Tivat.

The very name of the town which some call “Theudo” or “Theuto” is after Teuta, the queen of Risan whose beautiful gardens were located here, as well as all the splendors of the royal court in Roman times, on a plain near the sea.

Ethnographic Tivat Heritage

Although it is said that the suit does not make the man, the national costume is still something that completes the man. Something that paints our spaces and lives on them. Something to say even when words are silent. Each element has its own meaning, and in every meaning lies behind some life, story, tradition. Due to the variety and richness of folk costumes in the Boka area, not all of them can be depicted, but the most typical are the Lastovo women’s, the men’s Bokelj costumes and the Montenegrin men’s and women’s costumes.

Maritime Tivat Heritage

A unique introduction to the nautical history of Boka Kotorska, a kind of museum, the Collection of Maritime Heritage in Porto Montenegro, reflects the rich maritime traditions and recalls the extraordinary nautical past of the Adriatic.
The collection has over 300 exhibits, from Yugoslav submarines to the logbook of Princess Xenia, Austro-Hungarian ship equipment and industrial machinery. The walls of the old ambient building, during the exhibitions, are adorned with cult works of artistic expression, including works by Scythian, Cullenis, Roy Liechtenstein, Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol.

This building was a sawmill during Arsenal, and Arsenal itself was one of the largest naval bases in the Adriatic, founded by Austro-Hungarian in 1889. The preserved artifacts in it all remind visitors of the development path of the former Arsenal, which reflects the interaction of people and places, economic activities and citizens of Tivat. In parallel with the realization of its ambitious vision, Porto Montenegro has valorized this space with the desire to preserve the past for future generations. The Arsenal used to be an important base for overhauling, repairing supplies to submarines, originally Austro-Hungarian and German, and then submarines belonging to Yugoslavia. After the Second World War, he operated under the name of SZ Kovacevic RZ.

Valorization of Sacral Heritage

Tradition is something that is kept, what is conveyed, what is intentionally given and what lasts.
Tradition is something that our ancestors knew, and what we know today, and tomorrow our children, including their children, will know, and so the chain goes on and is a keeper of things that are really worth keeping. People are a vault, and tradition is a treasure that is kept in it. Tradition is first and foremost the oral transmission of knowledge, skills, behaviors and customs within one culture or group of people. Among other things, tradition means oral tradition, the transfer of knowledge of the common, customs, conventions, ancient folk customs.
Tradition in this sense is a cultural heritage that is passed down from generation to generation. These include learned knowledge, and artistic crafts as well as rituals, moral rules, and eating habits.

City Music

At the end of the 19th century, with the first indications of industrial and maritime development in the rural-rural Tivat, the usual songs “bagpipes” and
“Sounds” were replaced by new sounds as a recognizable form of musical expression. Local and young music-loving locals accepted the news as a challenge and in 1891, Antun Zezelic managed to form the first orchestra. The orchestra consisted of 11 musicians. Church ceremonies, weddings, serenades and occasional evening parties in Tivat villages, hamlets, were enriched with orchestral music. After the termination of this orchestra, an 8-member tamburitza orchestra was established. This orchestra also performed at various festivities right up to the start

The “New Time” in Tivat also brings to the locals the idea of establishing the first, true “bleh” music. The reason for such thinking is the presence of a military brass band within the 91st Austro-Hungarian Regiment in the naval Arsenal. The music was played traditionally “on Brackovo” on Spasovdan in Tivat and on Petrovdan in Risan and Cetinje. She welcomed and accompanied numerous statesmen, from Archduke Friedrich and King Alexander in Tivat, the Zetsky Ban on Cetinje, Joseph Broz Tito to the current incumbent.

November 7 is celebrated as the Day of the Tivat Music and Education Society. The highest quality after 103 years of existence of the society is certainly its duration. Continuous effort to continue playing music, patience and willingness to train over 250 musicians who have acquired the knowledge of notes and instruments in this collective, the struggle for existence, the desire of Tivat residents to have music, the habit of music, tradition.

Boka Navy

The Bokelj Navy was founded in the 9th century (809 AD) and since then has been continuously operating as the oldest organization of seafarers in our country and in the world.

Intensive involvement in the maritime economy has made the Boka residents good sailors, shipbuilders and brave warriors. In order to secure maritime routes, they fought against invasions and occupation for centuries. That is why in Boka Kotorska, earlier than in many other coastal regions, an organized activity of sailors appeared – the Boka Navy.

The development of naval and shipbuilding in Lastva and Tivat developed the Bokelj Navy. In the eighteenth century, the sailors from Lastva served on Peruvian ships used for defense against the occupiers, as well as for the transport of state mail to Venice and sometimes to Constantinople.

Lastovo’s seafaring peaked in the period 1705-1797. Over the course of 92 years, it has owned 23 larger and smaller sailboats with 25 patrols and 2 captains.

In Tivat, the command of the Austrian Navy built the naval Arsenal in 1889. The Municipal Council chaired by Mato Filip Krstovic made a unanimous decision to grant the Navy free land for the construction of a shipyard, which was of great importance for the life of the population of the area.
The Bokelj Navy recruited most of the sailors and officers from Lastva. The Navy barge was carried continuously by the Bokelj Navy for over 50 years until 1910. Sailors performed under uniforms and weapons during significant ceremonies. Also during the burial of the Boyle Navy sailors, in uniform and underarms, they were guarded and honored. Sailors from Lastva and Tivat accompanied by women and girls dressed in the famous Lastovo costume during their performances at the festivities in Kotor and local performances.

In the past, the Boka Navy had its own music – play music, and the text for the traditional Boka Navy circuit was written by Pavo Bozov Kamenarovic – Naval Captain from Dobrota. The Bokelj Navy also performed at celebrations outside Boka, Cetinje, Belgrade, Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Dubrovnik and more. The Bokelj Navy Branch in Tivat was founded in 1972 and the activity of Tivat Branch members continues to be intensive.

Lastva Manifestations

What is characteristic of Gornja Lastva and which is a symbol of former times is the gathering of locals near the threshing floor where they would socialize with song and play. In this beautifully conceived Mediterranean setting, there was always life, and it was painted by the sounds of beautiful songs and steps of folk dances that are still respected and heard today from Gornja Lastva.

Women and men have sung and played at weddings, other family festivities, religious holidays and celebrations, at village choirs, in front of the church, and at the guanas. Each house had a Bokelj Navy uniform with antique weapons and a women’s folk costume. Musical instruments were played by the lyric and later by the small harmonics – the record.

-Traditional Balling- The oldest sport that occurs in Tivat is bowling, and today it is the most massive and high-quality sport. Bowling in Tivat is done in two ways, there are so-called “new and old” rules. Official championship competition is based on new rules. Be part of the tradition and take part in the Christmas Olympics.

The oldest sport that occurs in Tivat is bowling, and today it is the most massive and high-quality sport. It appeared in 1903 and the first ball was at today’s Mimoza Hotel. The most unique and massive competition is the Bocce Olympics, which was played in 1981 for the 26th time.

Christmas was, according to some sources, one of the most entertaining games in ancient Egypt in 2500 BC, and according to others, it all started from Sparta and Timokreates five hundred years before Christ. The Romans, to whom the Etruscans brought the game, modified the game by adding a target that had to be approached as close as possible, and the Legionnaires carried that variant to Provence. The stone balls are replaced with wooden ones, but with nails to increase their weight, and in the Middle Ages the game expanded with Europe.
Bowling in Tivat is done in two ways, there are so-called “new and old” rules.

Official championship competition is based on new rules. The bowling court, called zog, is 27.5 m long and 2.5-4.00 m wide. There are two rectangles at the beginning and end of the ball that represent the main venue for the game. Their lengths are equal and they are 5m long, while the width depends on the width of the terrain. It should also be noted that there are a number of different disciplines within the new rules. We have classic disciplines, such as singles (one against one), doubles (two against two), threesomes (three against three), round, as well as shooting disciplines, which are more modern issues and are much more attractive because of the short but dynamic way of playing .
The old rules are only used during the season when competing at the municipal level. It’s fun, the competition it represents
the oldest and most numerous sports gathering in Tivat.

Tivat is the capital of the bowling competition, which has a representative in the Montenegrin national team in every generation. This sport is a hallmark of this city, which in the past and today has brought and brings prestigious awards.
