The Flower island – Miholjska Prevlaka

It’s hard to say whether this particular place is an island or a peninsula. In reality, it is something in between. The 300-metre-long and 200-metre-wide island is connected to the mainland by a strip of sand (and a bridge). At least as long as it is not flooded at high tide.
The small islet is known by two different names. The name Ostrvo cvijeća (Flower Island) came about because the island was lush with herbs and flowers, palms and olive trees. The rich vegetation and a variety of animals made it a lively little cosmos.
The island was named Miholjska Prevlaka in honour of the monastery of the Archangel Michael, which was built there in the 6th century. In the 13th century, the monastery encompassed the entire island and was the seat of the Episcopate of Zeta.
A visit to the island is worthwhile! Smell the special fragrance in the air, feel the spirit of history, visit the monastery, listen to the stories of the monks or just enjoy a long day on the beach.
